POPLIN
Poplin is our most standard quilter's weight fabric. It is used for quilts, skirts, button-up shirts, pillow cases, sturdier tops, cloth diapers, rompers, and more. Most projects use poplin. It's a great fabric to start with.
BROADCLOTH
This substrate a little heavier and thicker than poplin--appropriate for quilting and apparel. It is great for projects that will be washed a lot.
CANVAS
Canvas is a thick and durable woven material. It is great for backpacks, shoes, upholstery, caps, tents, banners, handbags, and even as a painting medium.
VOILE
Voile is a lightweight cotton fabric. If you hold it up to the light, you will find that it is semi-sheer. Voile is a great option for women's blouses, light summer dresses, and rompers to name a few things.
BATISTE
Batiste is lighter than voile and has a softer hand. It is great for infinity scarves, handkerchiefs, and lingerie.
BARKCLOTH
Barkcloth is a heavier substrate that is a woven fabric that is great for home decor and furnishing. It makes for beautiful drapes, couch pillows, and more!
INTERLOCK KNIT & JERSEY KNIT
Knits are stretchy. Interlock knits are thicker and have two "right sides" in terms of the "knit" pattern (althought prints do have a right and wrong side) and can be used for dresses, leggings, shirts, tops, robes, bras, diapers, blankets, and even bags! Jersey knits, on the other hand are thinner and have a right (knit) side as well as a wrong (purl) side. If you have ever knitted with yarn, its the same thing. Jersey knit is great for tops and can be used for leggings worn by young children.
FLANNEL
Flannel is soft and brushed to have a slight fuzziness that brings warmth and comfort. This is a great material for lounge pants, bedding, blankets, burp cloths and more.

]]>In the world of sewing and handmaking, the choice of materials is key to creating beautiful and sustainable creations that will last. When it comes to fabrics, organic cotton stands out as a top choice for environmentally conscious crafters. In this blog post, we will explore the numerous benefits of using organic cotton when sewing and handmaking items like apparel, home goods, and quilts.
Environmental Sustainability: One of the primary advantages of organic cotton is its positive impact on the environment. Unlike conventional cotton, which is usually grown using synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, organic cotton is cultivated using organic farming methods. This means that it is grown without harmful chemicals that can contaminate soil, water sources, and ecosystems. By choosing organic cotton, you are supporting a more sustainable and eco-friendly textile industry.
Healthier for You and Your Loved Ones: Conventional cotton production involves the use of pesticides, herbicides, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs), which can leave traces and residue on the final fabric product. These chemicals may cause skin irritation and allergic reactions in some people. Organic cotton, on the other hand, is free from these toxic substances, making it a healthier choice for those with sensitive skin, babies, and anyone seeking a more natural and non-toxic lifestyle.
Superior Softness and Comfort: When you work with organic cotton, you'll immediately notice the difference in quality. Organic cotton fibers are typically longer and more robust than their conventional counterparts, resulting in a fabric that is softer, smoother, and more breathable. Whether you're creating apparel or quilts, using organic cotton ensures a luxurious feel against the skin, providing optimal comfort.
Ethical Production and Fair Trade: Organic cotton supports ethical production practices and fair trade. Organic cotton producers prioritize fair wages and safe working conditions for farmers and workers, ensuring they receive proper compensation for their labor. By using organic cotton, you support these ethical initiatives, contributing to a more just and sustainable global textile industry.
When it comes to sewing and handmaking, the choice of materials plays a crucial role in both the outcome and the impact on the environment. By opting for organic cotton, you can enjoy numerous benefits, including environmental sustainability, superior comfort, and ethical production practices. Let's embrace organic cotton as a go-to material for our creative endeavors, ensuring a greener, healthier, and more beautiful world, one yard at a time.
]]>In years past, I've shown you how we up-cycle brown paper bags into Christmas gift wrap. Cotton gift wrap is another wonderful alternative to traditional wrapping paper. Not only is it eco-friendly, but it can also be used again and again (something lacking in my brown bag wraps). In this blog post, we'll go over how to create your own reusable cotton gift wrap.
First, you'll need to gather your supplies. You'll need:
Step 1: Measure and cut your fabric. Measure the size of the gift you want to wrap and add a few inches to each side. This will give you enough fabric to wrap the gift and tie it off. Once you've measured your fabric, cut it to size.
Step 2: Iron the fabric. Iron the fabric to remove any wrinkles or creases.
Step 3: Add any additional embellishments. If you want to add any additional embellishments to your gift wrap, now is the time to do it. You can add ribbon, buttons, or even embroidery.
Step 4: Hem the edges. Using your sewing machine, hem the edges of the fabric. This will prevent fraying and make the wrap look neater. Fold the edge over twice and stitch along the folded edge. If you'd like a quick, no-sew option, you can cut the fabric with pinking sheers.
Step 5: Wrap your gift. Place your gift in the center of the fabric and bring the corners up to the top. Tie the fabric in a knot or a bow to secure the gift.
Step 6: Enjoy your reusable gift wrap! Your reusable cotton gift wrap is now ready to use. You can use it again and again for all your gift-giving needs.
Creating your own reusable cotton gift wrap is not only eco-friendly, but it's also a fun and creative way to wrap gifts. By following these simple steps, you'll be able to create beautiful gift wrap that can be used again and again. Plus, it adds an extra touch of thoughtfulness and personalization to your gift-giving. So, get creative and start making your own reusable gift wrap today! Fabric can be expensive, but fininding beautiful cotton sheets from a thrift store is a great way to up-cycle and reduce the consumption of new gift wrap!
Have you ever made your own gift wrap?

If you're seeking a sustainable and cozy fabric for your autumn and winter sewing projects, look no further than our premium hemp French terry. In this blog post, we'll delve into the fascinating process of producing hemp fabric and uncover the unique qualities that make our hemp French terry a must-have for the colder months.
The Versatility of Hemp: Hemp, derived from the Cannabis sativa plant, is a versatile and sustainable fiber that has been used for centuries. It's known for its strength, durability, and breathability, making it an ideal choice for a wide range of textile applications. From clothing and accessories to home decor and more, hemp fabric offers a natural and eco-friendly alternative.
Cultivating and Harvesting Hemp: Hemp plants are grown in diverse regions worldwide, with a focus on sustainable farming practices. The cultivation process naturally involves minimal use of pesticides and herbicides (ours uses none!), ensuring a healthier environment. Hemp plants are typically ready for harvesting within 70-90 days, making them a fast-growing and renewable resource.
Retting and Fiber Extraction: Once harvested, the hemp stalks undergo a process called retting. This involves soaking the stalks in water to separate the fibers from the plant material.
Fiber Processing and Spinning: After retting, the hemp fibers are extracted and undergo further processing. The fibers are cleaned, carded, and aligned to create a consistent and smooth texture. They are then spun into yarn, ready to be woven or knitted into fabric. This careful processing ensures the highest quality hemp fabric that is soft, breathable, and luxurious.
The Beauty of Hemp French Terry: Now that you understand the journey of hemp fabric production, let's talk about our exquisite hemp French terry. Designed with comfort and style in mind, our hemp French terry fabric is perfect for cozy autumn and winter garments. Its looped back texture provides warmth and insulation, making it ideal for sweaters, hoodies, loungewear, and more.
Embracing Sustainable Fashion: By choosing our hemp French terry fabric, you're not only treating yourself to a luxurious fabric but also making a conscious choice for the planet. Hemp is naturally resistant to pests and requires minimal water and land compared to other crops. Its cultivation promotes healthy soil and reduces the carbon footprint, making it a sustainable option for eco-conscious sewists.
As you gear up for the autumn and winter seasons, consider incorporating the sustainable beauty of hemp French terry into your sewing projects. From its cultivation and fiber extraction to its luxurious texture and eco-friendly qualities, hemp fabric is a true marvel.
Happy sewing and sustainable living!

Tips and Tricks:
Hi Friends!
Today, we're going to talk about organic cotton fabric and its many benefits for our health and the environment. But before we dive into the world of organic cotton, let's talk about something you may not know: your skin is the largest organ in your body!
Yes, you read that right. Your skin is not only the largest organ, but it also plays an important role in protecting your body from external elements. However, did you know that the chemicals and toxins that touch your skin can be absorbed into your body? That's right, everything from the clothes you wear to the lotion you put on can impact your overall health and wellbeing.
That's why it's essential to be mindful of the materials we use, especially when it comes to the clothes we wear. That's where organic cotton fabric comes in.
What is Organic Cotton Fabric?
Organic cotton fabric is made from cotton that is grown without the use of harmful chemicals, pesticides, or fertilizers. Instead, farmers use natural and sustainable farming practices to ensure that their cotton is safe and healthy for both the environment and the people who wear it.
Why Choose Organic Cotton Fabric?
Now that we know what organic cotton fabric is let's talk about why it's a great choice for both our health and the environment.
One of the biggest benefits of organic cotton is that it's better for the environment. Traditional cotton farming uses a lot of chemicals and pesticides that are harmful to the soil, water, and air. These chemicals can also have negative impacts on wildlife and local ecosystems.
Organic cotton farming, on the other hand, uses natural and sustainable practices that help to preserve the environment. These practices include crop rotation, natural pest control, and the use of compost and other natural fertilizers.
As we mentioned earlier, the chemicals and toxins in non-organic cotton fabric can be absorbed into your body through your skin. These chemicals can cause skin irritation, allergies, and even more severe health problems in some cases.
Organic cotton fabric, on the other hand, is free from harmful chemicals and toxins, making it a safer and healthier choice for you and your family.
Organic cotton fabric is also more comfortable to wear than non-organic cotton. Because it's grown without the use of harsh chemicals and pesticides, it's softer and more breathable. This means that it's perfect for people with sensitive skin or allergies.
Where Can You Find Organic Cotton Fabric?
Now that we've talked about the many benefits of organic cotton fabric let's talk about where you can find it.
Thankfully, organic cotton fabric is becoming more widely available. Many clothing brands are now offering organic cotton options, and you can also find it at Organic Fabric Company. This is our entire model!
If you're interested in buying organic cotton fabric, be sure to look for certifications from organizations like GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) or Oeko-Tex Standard 100, which ensure that the cotton is truly organic and free from harmful chemicals.
Organic cotton fabric is a fantastic choice for anyone looking to make a positive impact on the environment and their health. By choosing organic cotton, you're supporting sustainable farming practices and ensuring that your clothes are free from harmful chemicals and toxins.
So next time you're shopping for new clothes or fabric, be sure to consider organic cotton. Your skin (and the environment) will thank you!

Polyester and other synthetic materials have become increasingly popular in the textile industry due to their affordability, especially since many are made from chemical by-product. However, exposure to polyester and synthetic materials can lead to several health problems, including skin irritation, allergies, and respiratory issues.
Skin Irritation and Allergies: Polyester and other synthetic materials are made from petrochemicals that can irritate the skin. Wearing clothes made from these materials can cause skin rashes, itching, and redness. The chemicals used in the production of synthetic fibers, such as formaldehyde and dyes, can also cause allergic reactions. People with sensitive skin are more prone to these types of reactions.
Poor Breathability: Synthetic materials are not breathable and do not allow air to circulate around the body. This can cause excessive sweating, which can lead to skin irritation and unpleasant odors. In addition, synthetic materials can trap heat, making it uncomfortable to wear in hot weather.
Risk of Infection: Wearing clothes made from synthetic materials can increase the risk of infection. Bacteria and fungi thrive in warm and moist environments, and synthetic materials can create such an environment. This can lead to skin infections, such as athlete's foot and jock itch.
Chemical Exposure: Synthetic materials are treated with a variety of chemicals during the manufacturing process, including flame retardants, stain repellents, and wrinkle-resistant agents. These chemicals can be absorbed through the skin and lead to health problems, such as cancer, reproductive issues, and developmental problems.
Environmental Health Concerns: The manufacturing process of synthetic materials involves the use of chemicals that can harm the environment. These chemicals can contaminate water and air and lead to health problems for people living in the vicinity of the manufacturing facilities.
Respiratory Issues: Synthetic materials can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air, which can cause respiratory issues, such as asthma and bronchitis. In addition, synthetic materials can trap dust, pollen, and other allergens, aggravating respiratory problems.
Microplastic Pollution: When synthetic materials are washed, they release microplastics, which are small plastic fibers that can enter the waterways and oceans. These microplastics can harm marine life and enter the food chain, posing a health risk to humans who consume seafood.
Alternatives to Synthetic Materials:
If you are concerned about the health problems associated with wearing polyester and synthetic materials for clothing, there are several alternatives available:
Organic Cotton: Organic cotton is grown without the use of harmful chemicals and pesticides, making it a safer option for clothing. It is also more breathable and comfortable to wear.
Hemp: Hemp is a durable and strong material that is naturally resistant to bacteria and UV rays. It is also breathable and moisture-wicking, making it a good option for outdoor wear.

]]>Creating a more sustainable handmade and upcycled wardrobe from natural fiber materials and from clothing you already own can be a fun and rewarding process. Not only will you be helping to reduce the negative impact that the fast-fashion industry has on the environment, but you will also be able to express your creativity and personal style in a one-of-a-kind way.
The first step is to evaluate your current wardrobe and identify which items you want to keep and which ones you no longer need. We really only need a handful of articles. I like to keep a color blocked wardrobe using my favorite neutral colors and just a few pieces that complement, but really pop. Consider donating or selling any items that are in good condition but that you no longer wear. I love seeing what I can pass on to friends who have shown interest in certain pieces in the past.
Next, think about what kind of clothing you want to make or upcycle. You may want to start with simple projects, such as turning an old t-shirt into a tank top, using a pair of jeans to make a denim skirt, or turning an old cotton flat sheet into a long skirt or even an apron! As you become more comfortable with sewing and upcycling, you can move on to more complex projects, such as making a dress or a beautiful duster!
When choosing materials for your handmade and upcycled wardrobe, it is important to select natural fibers that are sustainable and environmentally friendly. Natural fibers are biodegradable and can be composted at the end of their life cycle. Some of the most popular natural fibers for clothing include cotton, linen, and hemp. You can read why bamboo doesn't make the cut here: https://www.organicfabriccompany.com/blogs/blog/have-you-ever-wondered-why-we-dont-carry-bamboo-fabrics
Cotton is one of the most commonly used natural fibers for clothing. However, conventional cotton farming is one of the most environmentally damaging practices in the world. It is important to choose organic cotton, which is grown without the use of pesticides and other harmful chemicals. Organic cotton is also grown using less water than conventional cotton.
Linen is another popular natural fiber that is sustainable and environmentally friendly. Linen is made from the fibers of the flax plant, which requires less water and fewer pesticides than cotton. Linen is also biodegradable and can be composted at the end of its life cycle. Some of our selections of linen are made from 100% organic linen while others are blended with organic cotton.
Hemp is a highly sustainable natural fiber that requires no pesticides or herbicides to grow. Hemp is also biodegradable and can be composted at the end of its life cycle. Hemp fibers are strong and durable, making them ideal for clothing and other textile products.
Bamboo can be a highly sustainable natural fiber. Bamboo is a fast-growing plant that requires no pesticides or herbicides to grow. However, bamboo fibers are extremely fiberous and can be rough and scratchy. Most bamboo on the market is bamboo viscose which is chemically treated to become soft material most of us are familiar with. Viscose, although sourced from a natural material is considered a synthetic and hightly processed material once it reaches the end consumer. Although it is possible to find non-viscose bamboo fabric, this is not what most of us are familair with. You can read more about bamboo here.
Once you have chosen your materials, it is time to start sewing and upcycling. There are many resources available online that can help you learn how to sew and upcycle clothing. YouTube is a great resource for tutorials and step-by-step guides.
When upcycling clothing, there are several techniques you can use to transform an old piece of clothing into something new and exciting. Some popular techniques include:
Dyeing is a great way to give new life to an old piece of clothing. You can use natural dyes, such as indigo or turmeric, to create unique and beautiful colors. (Read our past blog on dyeing fabric here!)
Embroidery is a great way to add a personal touch to your clothing.
Patchwork is a great way to use up scraps of fabric and create a one-of-a-kind piece of clothing. You can use a variety of fabrics to create a unique design. I love mending clothing using a combination of embroidery and patching techniques.
You can use applique to add a pop of color or a fun design to your clothing.
Another possibility that many overlook is using large textiles from around the home (such as cotton sheets) and using a pattern to create a dress or skirt.
When choosing sustainable natural materials, it is important to consider not only the production process but also the disposal process. Biodegradable materials are preferable, as they can be composted at the end of their life cycle and do not contribute to landfill waste.

]]>Hello there! Are you curious about organic fabrics? You've come to the right place! Organic fabrics are gaining popularity due to their eco-friendly and sustainable nature. They are becoming a top choice for those who care about the environment and want to make conscious choices in their clothing and home textile purchases. In this blog post, we'll delve into what makes fabric "organic" and why it's worth considering for your wardrobe and home.
So, what exactly makes a fabric "organic"? In a nutshell, organic fabrics are made from fibers that are grown without the use of synthetic chemicals such as pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers. Instead, organic farmers use natural methods like crop rotation, composting, and biological pest control to maintain soil fertility, manage pests, and promote biodiversity. This not only helps protect the environment but also promotes healthier working conditions for farmers and promotes sustainable agricultural practices.
One of the most commonly used organic fibers in fabrics is organic cotton. Organic cotton is grown from non-genetically modified (GM) seeds, without the use of chemical fertilizers or pesticides. According to the Organic Trade Association, organic cotton production relies on natural methods such as crop rotation, mechanical weed control, and biological pest control to maintain soil health and reduce the impact on the environment [1]. The absence of synthetic chemicals in organic cotton farming also protects the health and well-being of cotton farmers, who are often exposed to harmful chemicals in conventional cotton farming [2].
In addition to organic cotton, other organic fibers commonly used in fabrics include organic hemp, organic bamboo (read more about bamboo and why we don't recommend it here), and organic linen. These fibers are also grown using natural methods without the use of synthetic chemicals, making them a sustainable and environmentally-friendly choice.
Organic fabrics not only benefit the environment and farmers, but they also have advantages for consumers. One of the significant benefits is that organic fabrics are often softer and hypoallergenic compared to conventional fabrics. This is because they are free from harmful chemicals and residues that may cause skin irritations or allergies. Organic fabrics are also often more breathable, which can help regulate body temperature and provide better comfort, especially in warmer climates or during physical activities.
In addition to being good for the environment and consumers, supporting organic fabrics also promotes fair trade and social responsibility. Many organic fabric producers adhere to fair trade practices, which ensure that farmers and workers receive fair wages and safe working conditions. This helps to empower and support local communities, and promotes ethical and sustainable supply chains.
In conclusion, organic fabrics are a great choice for those who are looking for environmentally-friendly, sustainable, and socially responsible options for their clothing and home textiles. By choosing organic fabrics, you can contribute to protecting the environment, supporting farmers and workers, and promoting healthier and more sustainable practices in the textile industry. So, go ahead and explore the world of organic fabrics - your planet, your body, and your conscience will thank you!
