FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to Organic Fabric Company. Below you’ll find answers to our most common questions about fabric cuts, shipping, organic fabric, certifications, swatches, returns, and choosing the right fabric for your sewing project.

Fabric Cuts & Yardage

What size fabric cuts do you offer?

Most of our fabric listings are sold by the half yard, with select fabrics also available by the quarter yard or fat quarter.

If you order multiple half-yard quantities of the same fabric, your fabric will be cut as one continuous piece whenever possible. For example, if you need 2.5 yards, add 5 quantities of “1/2 yard” to your cart. You will receive one continuous 2.5-yard cut.

Fat quarters are different. If you order 2 fat quarters of the same fabric, you will receive two individual fat quarter cuts, not one continuous piece.

End-of-bolt pieces are also sold as separate cuts and may not be continuous with other pieces of the same print.

What are your fabric cut sizes?

Unless noted on the product page, most of our quilting cotton fabric is 43/44 inches wide.

Our standard cut sizes are:

Fat Quarter: approximately 18" x 22"
1/4 Yard: approximately 9" x 44"
1/2 Yard: approximately 18" x 44"
1 Yard: approximately 36" x 44"

Please check each product listing for fabric width, fiber content, and any special notes.

Will my yardage be cut continuously?

Yes, yardage is cut continuously whenever possible.

For example, if a fabric is sold by the half yard and you order a quantity of 4, you will receive one continuous 2-yard cut of that fabric.

The main exceptions are fat quarters, remnants, end-of-bolt pieces, and any listings where separate cuts are clearly noted.

Shipping & Order Processing

Do you offer free shipping?

Yes, we offer free domestic shipping when your order meets the current free-shipping threshold.

For orders that do not meet the threshold, standard domestic shipping rates will be shown at checkout.

Are any fabrics excluded from free domestic shipping?

No. At this time, all fabric types are eligible for free domestic shipping when your order meets the current free-shipping threshold.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes, Organic Fabric Company ships worldwide.

International shipping rates are shown at checkout. If actual international shipping costs are lower than the amount paid, we refund shipping overages when your order is processed.

Canadian customers: Flat-rate shipping may be available on cotton print fabric. Approximately 10 yards of quilting cotton can often ship within the flat-rate amount, depending on the order and packaging needs.

How quickly do you ship orders?

Most orders ship within approximately 2–5 business days.

All fabric is cut to order and processed in the order it is received. Express shipping upgrades are prioritized whenever possible.

During busy seasons, new fabric releases, or sales, processing may take a little longer. You will receive tracking information by email once your order ships.

Can I pick up my order locally?

We are not currently able to offer local pickup.

Fabric Samples & Swatches

Can I order a fabric sample or swatch?

Yes, fabric swatches are available for many fabrics.

Swatches are a helpful way to see the color, texture, weight, and feel of a fabric before ordering yardage. This is especially useful because colors can appear differently on different computer and phone screens.

Organic Fabric & Certifications

What kind of organic fabric do you sell?

Organic Fabric Company specializes in beautiful, sustainable fabrics for intentional sewing, including organic cotton fabrics and other thoughtfully sourced natural-fiber fabrics.

Our shop focuses on fabrics that are well suited for quilting, apparel, children’s sewing, home sewing, and handmade gifts.

Is your organic fabric certified?

Many of the fabrics we carry are made with certified organic cotton or other responsibly sourced fibers. Certification details can vary by manufacturer, fabric type, and collection.

When certification information is available, we include it on the product page or can help point you toward the appropriate manufacturer documentation.

Some fabrics may also carry OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certification, which means the fabric has been tested for harmful substances according to that standard.

Can I get a copy of a fabric certification?

Yes. When certification documents are available from the manufacturer, we are happy to help you find them.

The easiest way to request certification information is to contact us with the fabric name, collection, and manufacturer. If you are placing an order, you may also leave a note at checkout and we will do our best to provide the appropriate documentation by email.

What does OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 mean?

OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 means a fabric has been tested for a wide range of harmful substances according to OEKO-TEX® standards.

It does not necessarily mean the fiber is organic. Organic certification and OEKO-TEX® certification are different, and some fabrics may have one, both, or neither depending on the manufacturer.

Choosing Fabric

What fabric should I use for my sewing project?

The best fabric depends on what you are making, how the finished item will be used, and the feel you want.

For quilting, bags, children’s projects, and many home sewing projects, quilting cotton is a sturdy and versatile choice.

For garments, linen blends, cotton lawn, poplin, flannel, or other apparel-friendly fabrics may be a better fit depending on the pattern.

If you are unsure, you are welcome to contact us with your sewing pattern or project idea, and we can help you choose a fabric that makes sense.

What is quilting cotton best used for?

Quilting cotton is best for quilts, patchwork, simple children’s clothing, aprons, pillow covers, tote bags, craft projects, and many home sewing items.

It has a stable weave, presses well, and is beginner-friendly. It is less drapey than many apparel fabrics, so it may not be the best choice for flowy dresses, soft blouses, or garments that need a lot of movement.

What is OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 cotton fabric best for?

OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 cotton fabric is a beautiful choice for projects that touch the skin or home, including quilts, baby items, children’s clothing, napkins, pillowcases, simple garments, and handmade gifts.

Many sewists choose OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 cotton because they want a more thoughtful fabric option for their family, their home, and the earth.

Large Orders, Wholesale & Tax-Exempt Accounts

Do you offer discounts for large fabric orders?

Yes. If you plan to order large quantities, we recommend joining our rewards program so you can earn savings as you shop.

We also offer wholesale options for qualified businesses.

Do you offer wholesale fabric?

Yes, wholesale may be available for qualified businesses.

Please contact us with your business information, the fabrics you are interested in, and the approximate quantities you need.

You can see our bulk ordering program here!  You do not need to submit any paperwork to qualify for this discount.

I am in Utah and have a seller’s permit. Can I make tax-exempt purchases?

Yes. If you are purchasing for resale and have a valid Utah seller’s permit, email us a copy of your permit and we can help set up a tax-exempt vendor account.

You are responsible for paying any applicable taxes to the state of Utah and for letting us know if your tax status changes.

Packaging & Sustainability

Do you use eco-friendly packaging?

Yes, sustainability is important to us.

We use minimal packaging whenever possible and prioritize upcycled, recyclable, biodegradable, compostable, or responsibly sourced materials when available.

Because fabric orders vary in size and shape, packaging may look a little different from order to order, but our goal is always to ship your fabric safely while keeping waste as low as we can.

Returns, Cancellations & Order Issues

What is your return policy?

All fabric is cut to order, so we are unable to accept returns or cancellations unless we made a mistake with your order.

This policy helps us keep prices fair and ensures that cut fabric is not returned and resold.

Please review your order carefully before checking out. If we made an error with your order, contact us as soon as possible so we can make it right.

Can I return fabric if the color looks different in person?

We do not accept returns for color differences caused by screen variation.

We do our best to photograph fabrics accurately, but colors can look different depending on your monitor, phone, lighting, and screen settings. If color matching is important, we recommend ordering a swatch before purchasing yardage.

Where is my order?

Once your order ships, tracking information is sent by email.

If your package appears delayed, the best first step is to contact USPS or UPS directly using your tracking number. Once a package has been scanned by the carrier, it is in the carrier’s care.

If tracking says delivered but you cannot find your package, please check your mailbox, porch, side doors, and nearby areas. It is also helpful to wait one day in case the package was scanned early or delivered to a neighbor by mistake.

If your package has not scanned for more than a week, contact the carrier and start a claim or search request. If the carrier needs information from us, let us know and we will help where we can.
