What are low-impact dyes?

Hello friends!
"What are low-impact dyes?"  This is a question I get fairly regularly.  The most common questions pertain to what low-impact dyes are.  A lot of you wonder if they are plant-based dyes and made from organic substances (note: organic as in material composition, not certification).
To cut right to the point, no, low-impact dyes are not classified as natural or organic. They are synthetic dyes that made to very strict standards overseen by bodies such as GOTS and OEKO-TEX for safety and sustainability.  A primary goal of low-impact dyes is to reduce water waste and to create a closed-loop system in the production of textiles.  Unfortunately, this is something that cannot be achieved in mass scale with natural dyes.
Organic natural dyes use a lot of water, a lot of resources, and have inconsistent results making their use impractical on a large scale (especially when it comes to modern fabric printing), however, natural and traditional dying processes are wonderful at a small scale level and for home textile dying.

If you'd like to try your hand at natural dyeing methods, we do carry fabric that is prepared for dyeing here.
