Wrap Gifts Sustainably with Reusable Cotton Fabric: DIY Tutorial

Wrap Gifts Sustainably with Reusable Cotton Fabric: DIY Tutorial

In years past, I've shown you how we up-cycle brown paper bags into Christmas gift wrap.  Cotton gift wrap is another wonderful alternative to traditional wrapping paper. Not only is it eco-friendly, but it can also be used again and again (something lacking in my brown bag wraps). In this blog post, we'll go over how to create your own reusable cotton gift wrap.

First, you'll need to gather your supplies. You'll need:

  • Cotton fabric (upcycled fabric is best!)
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Scissors (Pinking scissors are helpful for an no-sew option!)
  • Iron
  • Fabric pen or pencil

Step 1: Measure and cut your fabric. Measure the size of the gift you want to wrap and add a few inches to each side. This will give you enough fabric to wrap the gift and tie it off. Once you've measured your fabric, cut it to size.

Step 2: Iron the fabric. Iron the fabric to remove any wrinkles or creases.

Step 3: Add any additional embellishments. If you want to add any additional embellishments to your gift wrap, now is the time to do it. You can add ribbon, buttons, or even embroidery.

Step 4: Hem the edges. Using your sewing machine, hem the edges of the fabric. This will prevent fraying and make the wrap look neater. Fold the edge over twice and stitch along the folded edge.  If you'd like a quick, no-sew option, you can cut the fabric with pinking sheers.

Step 5: Wrap your gift. Place your gift in the center of the fabric and bring the corners up to the top. Tie the fabric in a knot or a bow to secure the gift.

Step 6: Enjoy your reusable gift wrap! Your reusable cotton gift wrap is now ready to use. You can use it again and again for all your gift-giving needs.

Creating your own reusable cotton gift wrap is not only eco-friendly, but it's also a fun and creative way to wrap gifts. By following these simple steps, you'll be able to create beautiful gift wrap that can be used again and again. Plus, it adds an extra touch of thoughtfulness and personalization to your gift-giving. So, get creative and start making your own reusable gift wrap today!  Fabric can be expensive, but fininding beautiful cotton sheets from a thrift store is a great way to up-cycle and reduce the consumption of new gift wrap!
