Navigating Organic Fabric Certifications: Understanding GOTS and OEKO-TEX

We’re living in a time where many of us are becoming more thoughtful about what we bring into our homes… and what we place against our skin.

Fabric is one of those quiet, everyday things we don’t always question. But from the clothes we wear to the quilts we wrap around our children, textiles are woven into our daily lives in the most intimate way.

As more people begin choosing organic fabrics, there’s a natural question that follows: How do I know it’s truly safe, ethical, and what it claims to be?

This is where certifications come in.

Think of certifications as gentle markers of trust. They help ensure that a fabric has been made with care—for both people and nature—following specific standards along the way.

Two of the most trusted certifications you’ll come across are GOTS and OEKO-TEX®. Each one tells a different part of the story.

What is GOTS?

GOTS stands for the Global Organic Textile Standard, and it’s often considered the gold standard for organic fabrics.

It looks at the entire journey of a textile—from the field where the fiber is grown to the final fabric in your hands.

For a fabric to be GOTS certified:

  • It must be made with at least 95% organic fibers

  • The fibers are grown without synthetic pesticides or GMOs

  • Harmful chemicals and toxic dyes are not allowed in processing

  • Water and energy use are carefully managed

  • Workers are treated fairly, with safe conditions and proper wages

GOTS also requires full traceability, meaning the fabric can be tracked from beginning to end.

In simple terms, GOTS is about purity, responsibility, and honoring every step of the process.

What is OEKO-TEX®?

While GOTS focuses on how a fabric is grown and made, OEKO-TEX® focuses on what’s in the fabric when it reaches you.

The most common label you’ll see is OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, which means the fabric has been tested for harmful substances and is considered safe for human health.

This includes checking for things like:

  • Residual chemicals

  • Heavy metals

  • Irritants that could affect sensitive skin

There are also additional OEKO-TEX certifications that go deeper:

  • STeP looks at sustainable and ethical production practices

  • Made in Green combines safety testing with full transparency, allowing you to trace where and how a product was made

In essence, OEKO-TEX® offers peace of mind—especially for garments, bedding, and items that stay close to your skin.

Why These Certifications Matter

In a world full of labels and claims, certifications bring clarity.

They help you move from guessing… to knowing.

When you choose fabrics with trusted certifications, you are:

  • Supporting safer, cleaner production methods

  • Caring for your own health and your family’s well-being

  • Encouraging fair and ethical treatment of workers

  • Gently reducing the burden on nature

It’s not about perfection. It’s about choosing better, one step at a time.

A Simple Way to Remember

  • GOTS → How the fabric is grown and made

  • OEKO-TEX® → What is left in the fabric when it reaches you

Both matter. And together, they tell a more complete story.

When you’re choosing fabric—whether for a garment, a quilt, or something made with love—look for these small but meaningful certifications.

They are quiet assurances… that what you’re creating is not only beautiful, but also thoughtful, safe, and aligned with the kind of world you’re building, one stitch at a time.
